U of A maintains Top 100 standing in five strong subjects

Latest Times Higher Education subject rankings reflect excellence in subjects from computer science and engineering to health, education and life sciences.

The University of Alberta is one of the top institutions in the world to study subjects across the health sciences, natural and applied sciences, and social sciences and humanities, according to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject.

The U of A was ranked among the world’s Top 100 in five of the 11 major subject areas included in this year’s rankings:

  • Computer Science was ranked 77th globally, up three places from last year and holding steady at sixth in Canada. 
  • The Medical and Health subject area also placed 77th worldwide and maintained its national rank of fifth. This area includes medicine and dentistry, nursing and other health-care disciplines.
  • Education Studies came in at 82nd in the world and ranked fourth in Canada. 
  • Engineering came in at 90th worldwide and stayed at fifth in Canada. 
  • Life Sciences moved up four places to rank 96th worldwide after joining the Top 100 last year. This subject area includes programs in agriculture, biological sciences and sport science.

All five also made the Top 100 list in last year’s rankings.

The 2026 Times Higher Education subject rankings are based on measures of teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income, drawn from data compiled for THE’s 2026 World University Rankings.
