Why Green+Gold?
The University of Alberta has been home to green and gold since October 13, 1908. That’s the day the university’s Senate (functioning like our current day Board of Governors), at the suggestion of Marion Kirby Alexander, made the dynamic duo our official colours.
Green represents the vast prairie land flanked by deep spruce forests and symbolizes hope and optimism. Gold represents the harvest fields and symbolizes the light of knowledge. It’s also no coincidence that our lustrous river valley dons green and gold fall foliage!
These colours have evolved beyond mere pigments on our palette — they embody our school pride, resilience and identity. Today, green and gold adorns athletic team jerseys, convocation caps and a huge range of spiritwear. Our colours not only remind us of our rich heritage, but also serve as a vibrant canvas for our future stories.
