SciLife Student Newsletter

SciLife is a bi-weekly newsletter sent out to undergraduate students to promote social & academic happenings in the Faculty of Science. SciLife is typically published on Monday mornings during the academic year.

In order to ensure that the newsletter is valuable and timely, the following guidelines have been compiled for those interested in contributing content.

Submission Guidelines

Content appropriate for SciLife includes event announcements, promotion of student services, or promotion of volunteer or research opportunities. Submissions may be requested by:

  • Faculty of Science Departments
  • Registered science student groups (as defined by COSSA membership)
  • University of Alberta student groups registered on Rubric
  • Other University of Alberta administrative units
If space permits and the content is still relevant, submissions may run in multiple issues.

How to request a submission

Requests to submit content to SciLife must be completed via the SciLife Submission Request Form. Be prepared to provide the following information prior to submitting your request:

  • Heading (100 characters max) - This text will appear at the top of your submission.
  • Body Text (350 characters max) - The main body of your submission should be concise and include all relevant details. Have content in third person.
  • Link - Either a web link or email address people can visit for more information related to your submission.
  • Image (aspect ratio of 3:2, not to exceed 300 pixels wide) - Including an image is optional, but encouraged. You will be asked to share a google drive link to the image you'd like to use with your submission.  Please ensure your image is high quality and you have permission to use it -- copyrighted images or images of individuals who have not signed a photo release form will not be used. If you do not provide an image, a default image (usually of CCIS) will be used.
  • Date & Time (if applicable) - Include relevant details such as event dates, applications deadlines, etc.

Disclaimer: To optimize the management of newsletter content, the Faculty of Science reserves the right to exclude submissions determined to fall outside of the SciLife mandate. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Lectures, seminars or symposia that are by invitation only
  • Surveys and studies
