The Use of Humics in Crop Production
Presenter: Dr. Linda Gorim
This lecture discussed humics, which are widely marketed as options to reduce fertilizer inputs, improve soil health and maximize profits. While producers have been applying this Humalite (humic substance) to their fields — with huge deposits in Hanna, Alberta — limited independent research is available on the role of humics in western Canadian cropping systems. Knowing this, Gorim discussed findings from an Alberta wheat-canola rotation and indoor experiments to provides some recommendations.
The Human Side of Farm Succession Planning

In this lecture, Purc-Stephenson highlighted the key motivators and barriers that influence succession planning, common communication challenges that can stall progress and shared practical strategies for starting — and sustaining — meaningful conversations about succession. The session concluded with a panel discussion facilitated by Young Agrarians, featuring transition advisors, financial experts and local producers who bring real-world perspectives on navigating farm transitions and moving forward with clarity and confidence.
The Economics of Agricultural Production and Environmental Stewardship
Presenter: Dr. John Pattison-Williams
This engaging session focused on how nature-based solutions can contribute to more sustainable agriculture. Using real examples from Alberta and Saskatchewan, Pattison-Williams emphasized the importance of grassland and wetland ecosystems in carbon sequestration. He also explored the environmental and economic benefits of conservation and restoration efforts. The presentation provided practical insights for producers and industry members interested in sustainable land management.
