Ty Holmes, Law, Crime and Justice Studies

Coming from a small town, Ty Holmes was drawn to the size of the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus and the opportunity to pursue a bachelor of arts in law, crime and justice studies — the perfect start towards his dream career in law.

We caught up with Ty as he graduates and joins Augustana’s class of 2026.

Congratulations, Ty!

What led you to choose your current area of study, and why the U of A Augustana for your studies?

In high school in my small rural town, students from Augustana actually came to advertise the programs happening on campus. The program of law, crime and justice studies appeared to be exactly what I was looking for with a future career in law, whilst offering the breathing room to explore other courses I was interested in.

What is one of your favourite memories from your time at Augustana?

At Augustana, the smaller campus means you are likely to meet and know most of your peers. I was lucky enough to meet my fiancée through some of the classes we shared.

Tell us about your favourite professor and/or class.

Dr. Justin Tetrault and Dr. Ian Wilson made learning at Augustana a joy. Both were engaging lecturers, passionate about the topics and truly cared for the success of their students.

Did you take on any leadership roles while you were a student, either on campus or in the Camrose community? 

During my first year I was able to participate in the student community as the Indigenous student representative with the Augustana Students’ Association. This role provided a powerful experience for me in understanding and engaging with my community through serving as a liaison between students and our faculty.

How did you get where you are today?

I couldn't have gotten here without support from my friends and family. Their strength inspired me to give it my all, both inside and outside of school.

What advice do you have for current and future students?

Take your first years to explore what university means to you. This means exploring outside of your comfort zone — joining clubs, meeting new people and pursuing academia in a way that is unique to you.

How do you plan on celebrating convocation?

Alongside the close friends I met at Augustana.

What's next after graduation?

Currently, I am working with the Métis Education Foundation, connecting Métis students with resources they need to pursue and succeed in post-secondary.
