Application Process

  • Review research opportunities on the Summer Student Research Project Database.
  • Once you find a project that interests you, contact the supervisor (A1.1 or C1.1 academic (tenure-track) appointments).
    • Discuss potential funding sources with your supervisor.
    • Decide which agencies would be appropriate.
    • Complete the agency's application form.
    • Give yourself at least 5 business days prior to the agency's deadline, to collect necessary signatures.
    • After the application is signed off by the Faculty and the Institution, you will be contacted to pick it up.
    • Submit the complete application to the agency according to their instructions.
Note that applications submitted by FoMD faculty that are not successful in the AIberta Innovates Summer Research Studentship competition will be automatically forwarded to the Office of Research for consideration of internal awards and this includes CRINA/ACF and LKSIoV.

2026 FoMD Summer Student Funding

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has limited funding available for summer students. There is no separate application process, as students have to apply to the Alberta Innovates Summer Research Studentship. To qualify for these awards, students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on the last 60 credits. In addition to other awards, there are specialized studentships that students are funded from.

Students cannot hold another stipend award concurrently with a FoMD Research Studentship (e.g., other FoMD Awards, Alberta Innovates, URI stipend, Tri-Council USRA, etc.). Other awards may be used to partially supplement or “top-up” the FoMD Research Studentship, provided this does not contradict the policies of the secondary granting agency, and that the student does not receive the full value of the second award.

Students cannot work in multiple labs on different projects with other sources of stipend support.

Failure to undertake the proposed work will result in the immediate termination of the award. Students who decide to withdraw from the program are required to immediately notify the FoMD Office of Research to have your studentship terminated. Failure to comply will result in the return of all dispersed funds.

Given the diversity of Summer Research Studentship projects and project timelines, the Office of Research does not prescribe specific hours of work for students. It is essential that students discuss the expected time commitment with their supervisors prior to applying for the award. The time commitments should then be considered when determining the project scope, term of the award, and the mentoring environment.

Supervisor eligibility

  • Supervisors must hold an A1.1 or C1.1 primary faculty appointment at the University of Alberta (see definitions here). Academic staff in temporary or contract positions (e.g., Adjunct or TRAS category) are not eligible for the FoMD internal awards. They may, however, co-supervise if the primary supervisor meets the eligibility criteria above.
  • Supervisors may apply with a maximum of four students through the URI streamlined application process, which includes the Alberta Innovates SRS, URI Stipend, and all affiliated funding programs. Each student must have a separate project. Applications in excess of this limit will not be adjudicated. If students are not successful in their applications, it is expected that the supervisor will support the student.
