Lost in Japan

“There's something special and something really unique about being in a completely different country. My favourite part was the people I got to meet.” Nico Leung, exchange, Japan

Nico Leung is no stranger to experiencing different cultures. At the young age of eight, he moved from Hong Kong to Calgary, where he had his first encounter with culture shock. Even at that age, he could start to see the importance of being exposed to different ways of life.

“It's actually really enriching to your personal growth to be able to experience different cultures and understand what it means to live in this world, not just within your bubble of what you’re familiar with.”

Currently, Nico is working as a sustainability consultant at Deloitte in Calgary. In 2024, he graduated from the U of A with a business degree in finance.

Nico initially had dreams of going to Spain, but decided to go to Japan instead since the timing lined up better with his post-graduation plans. Despite it being his second choice, Nico had always wanted to go to Japan ever since his internship at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he experienced first-hand a blend of immigrant cultures. Japan juxtaposed Singapore in that sense — a lack of immigration has allowed Japanese culture to remain distinct, which has contributed to its allure.

“Don't limit yourself to the jurisdiction you're in because there's so much to discover, even within yourself.”
