Registering for Work Experience Course

Registration procedures for Work Experience (WKEXP) 901 through 905 courses are the same as those for regular academic courses. Students should register in the appropriate co-op course using Bear Tracks.

Fall & Winter Sessions

Fall and winter work term registration takes place during the preceding spring/summer. Students select and register in their academic and work experience courses as follows:

  • Academic courses or the appropriate work experience course for the period September 1 to December 31.
  • Academic courses or the appropriate work experience course for the period January 1 to April 30.

Summer Session

Work experience courses that occur between May 1 and August 31 are listed in term 2 of the Summer Session. Registration for these work experience courses opens in February and closes in early July.

Co-op Course Fee

There is a University of Alberta course fee for each four-month work term (WKEXP).

The fee for each Work Experience course is set by the University. In addition to the course fee, there are miscellaneous fees from the university and Students’ Union, such as the UPass.

For domestic students, you can find work experience fee information from the Office of the Registrar.

For more information, please visit the Financial Considerations page.

Taking courses while in co-op

Students on a work term (WKEXP) are allowed to take a maximum of one academic course during the 4 month work term provided it does not interfere with work hours and your employer has granted you permission to do so. Do not expect to be exempt from overtime or have time off for exams. You must complete the Academic Course Approval During Co-op Work Terms form after you have obtained permission from your employer. If you do not complete this form by the Add/Drop date any courses other than WKEXP will be deleted.
