Launch. Commercialize. Scale.

The Engineering Incubator is a mentor-centric commercialization platform designed to move innovation from concept to a venture scale company. We work with students, researchers, faculty, and recent alumni across all faculties to transform technical ideas into scalable ventures.

Our model integrates structured entrepreneurial education with real venture execution. Participants develop the skills, discipline, and strategic judgment required to navigate commercialization while actively building alongside experienced mentors and industry leaders. There is no cost to participate, and no equity or fees are taken.

We guide teams toward one of three primary outcomes:

Building a Sustainable Business
Develop a revenue-generating, cashflow-positive enterprise that can thrive independently.

Securing Venture Capital Funding
Raise investment capital to scale technology-driven ventures with national or global ambition.

Advancing to a Top-Tier Accelerator
Position ventures for entry into globally recognized programs such as Y Combinator, Techstars, or the Creative Destruction Lab.

Who We Serve

We serve makers, researchers, engineers, scientists, and innovators across the University of Alberta ecosystem. Whether you are exploring entrepreneurship within a course, contributing to a venture as part of your academic experience, or leading a company of your own, the Incubator provides a structured pathway toward commercialization. Our focus extends beyond any single faculty. Innovation is interdisciplinary — and so are we.

What We Believe

At the Engineering Incubator, commercialization is not accidental. We believe it is learned through exposure, mentorship and disciplined action.

Students and researchers deserve opportunities to experience technology entrepreneurship both inside the classroom and alongside real ventures. By integrating education with execution, we help innovators build confidence under uncertainty and make informed decisions at every stage of growth.

How We Help

The Engineering Incubator provides access to experienced mentors, structured programming, interdisciplinary workshops, a venture-focused workspace in the Engineering Teaching & Learning Complex (ETLC), early-stage funding opportunities, and meaningful connections to industry and investors. We create an environment where innovation can move beyond the lab, beyond the classroom, and into the marketplace.

THE INNOVATOR PROGRAM

The ICE cohort supports 15 teams for an 8-12 month period by pairing teams with mentors to set bi-weekly goals, develop the business, and tackle technical problems. Educational sessions focused on cohort interests are also provided monthly.

Goals for teams within the cohort will vary depending on their stage of development, but some key outcomes may include a pitch deck, customer discovery, VC relations, or finalized prototypes. All teams end the program with a demonstration day for funding entities.
