Canada Research Training Awards Suite – Research Travel Supplements
The Canada Research Training Awards Suite – Research Travel Supplements (CRTAS-RTS) provide additional funding to active master’s and doctoral award holders to help offset the costs of undertaking research travel within Canada or outside Canada for a defined period.
The CRTAS is administered by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and aims to support the next generation of innovators by providing funding and high-quality research training, cultivating research skills, fostering creativity and empowering awardees to make significant contributions to Canada’s research ecosystem, economy and prosperity.
The value of a CRTAS-RTS is $9,000 and is non-renewable.
The CRTAS-RTS supports a minimum of two months (59 days) and a maximum of six months (184 days) of research travel.
To be eligible to apply for this supplement, you must:
- be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident of Canada, or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada)
- have accepted or currently hold a master’s or doctoral award from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC (including a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship)
- begin your proposed research travel on or after the application deadline date
- not have held or be currently holding a Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS)
- not hold a CRTAS-RTS more than once
To remain eligible during the research study period abroad, students must:
- must hold an active master’s or doctoral award at the time the research study period abroad starts
- be registered full-time in the graduate program at the U of A for the duration of the research study period abroad
- take up the supplement within one year of receiving the notice of award for the CRTAS-RTS
- return to complete their degree at U of A

Eligible applicants must follow the steps below:
- Complete the CRTAS-RTS application form.
- Submit the application to GPS Award Services for Institutional Approval
Applicants must send their complete and signed application (as a single PDF) to GPS Award Services via the Student Service Portal (Contact GPS/Scholarships, Loans, and Funding/Awards and Scholarships) - The signed application form will be returned to the applicant. It is the applicant’s responsibility to submit the finalized application directly to the Tri-council through secure submission site by June 10.
Deadline to submit a complete application directly to Tri-council’s secure submission site is June 10, 2026.
Late applications will not be accepted. The agencies will review the applications received for eligibility and completeness. Supplements will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
