Admission Requirements


You are eligible for an exchange to UAlberta if you satisfy the following requirements at the time of application:

  1. You are a student at an institution that has a student exchange agreement with UAlberta.
    • A memorandum of understanding between UAlberta and your home institution is NOT sufficient; a student exchange agreement must also exist.
  2. You are a full-time student.
  3. You have a complete set of grade results from at least one term/semester at your home institution.
  4. You have a cumulative GPA equivalent to at least a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  5. You satisfy the relevant undergraduate English proficiency requirements or graduate English proficiency requirements. Please note that: 
    • Some departments and faculties have higher English proficiency requirements for graduate students than those shown through the relevant link provided above.  
    • Undergraduate students and graduate students from certain countries or universities may not have to demonstrate English proficiency.
  6. If you wish to apply for a graduate-level exchange then you must also:
    • have already completed an undergraduate degree or its equivalent,
    • be registered in a graduate-level program, and ...
    • have a complete set of grade results from at least one semester/term in your graduate program.

Some UAlberta faculties have other and/or higher requirements at the time of application:

The Alberta School of Business also requires that you have:

  • completed introductory-level statistics, calculus, microeconomics, and macroeconomics coursework at the post secondary level, 
  • completed at least 4 semesters in a business program by the time the exchange program starts, and ...
  • a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8 on a 4.0 scale
This faculty is closed to students participating in the National Student Exchange (NSE) program or in the Killam Fellowships Program.

The Faculty of Engineering also requires that you have:

  • completed at least 4 semesters in an engineering program by the time the exchange program starts and ...
  • a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
This faculty is closed to students participating in the National Student Exchange (NSE) program or in the Killam Fellowships Program.

The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation also requires that you be enrolled in a similar program at your home institution.

The Faculty of Law also requires that you:

  • be enrolled in a law program at your home institution and ...
  • have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8 on a 4.0 scale

The undergraduate-level Juris Doctor program is a professional after-degree program requiring a prior bachelor's degree.  Students without this background should consult with their home institution academic advisors before applying for the exchange and seek permission to take fewer than the maximum number of courses allowable per term if necessary.

This faculty is closed to students participating in the National Student Exchange (NSE) program or in the Killam Fellowships Program.
