Course Offerings, Schedules and Syllabi

Courses in the subject areas taught at UAlberta

  1. Go to the Course Catalogue
  2. On the right side of the page, you'll see a listing of UAlberta faculties. You can click on the name of any faculty to see the different subject areas it teaches.  (Please note that some subject areas may be taught in more than one faculty. For example, psychology is taught in both the Faculty of Arts and in the Faculty of Science.)
  3. When you find a subject area that interests you make note of its subject "code". For example, the subject code for psychology is "PSYCH".
  4. Go back to the Course Catalogue
  5. On the left side of the page you'll see a section entitled, “Specific Subject or Course”. In the field for "Subject" enter the subject code and then click on the grey "View" button.
  6. You will be taken to a complete list of all courses with the relevant subject code. The list will also include a brief description of each course.

When courses are offered, their weekly schedules, and other course information

  1. Go to the Course Catalogue
  2. On the right side of the screen you should see a list of faculties.  Clicking on any one of the faculties will take you to a list of different subject areas it teaches.
  3. Clicking on any of the subject areas will take you to a complete list of its courses.
  4. To the right of each course listed there will be a "View Available Classes" button.  Clicking on that button will show you if that course will be offered and, if offered, in which upcoming term(s) it will be offered along with other information which can include days of week offered, if the course is online (instead of in-person which is the default), name of instructor, etc.
  5. Depending on when you are applying for an exchange you may not see course listings for the term or first term when you will actually be at UAlberta on exchange. Course listings and schedules for the upcoming school year are not typically updated until March or April of the previous school year at the earliest.

Course syllabi or descriptions

There is no requirement that UAlberta instructors post course syllabi or descriptions online but many do and many will provide them upon request. There are 2 ways that you might acquire course syllabi or descriptions:

  1. Go to the Course Catalogue
  2. In the "Specific Subject or Course” section, enter the subject code of the relevant course (e.g., "PSYCH") in the field for "Subject" and then click on the grey "View" button.
  3. You will be taken to a complete list of all courses with the relevant subject code. Click on the "View Available Classes" button for the course (e.g., "PSYCH 104") that interests you.
  4. Near the top of the screen, you *might* see a button for "Historical Syllabi". Clicking on it will take you to a page that *might* have syllabi that you can download and then view.
  5. Under the column for "Instructor(s)" you *might* see names of current or recent instructors. Clicking on the names will take you to pages with more information about them.  On these new pages clicking on the "Directory >" buttons will take you to pages having their email addresses.  You can make note of their email addresses and contact them to ask for syllabi.

  1. Go to www.ualberta.ca and click on the search/magnifying glass symbol near the top right corner of the screen.
  2. Type the course code and number (e.g., "PSYCH 104") in the golden search bar near the top of the page and then click on the green search/magnifying glass symbol at the right end of the golden search bar.
  3. Doing so might bring up a search result with a former or current instructor name.
  4. Make note of all instructor names you see.
  5. Next, you would go back to www.ualberta.ca and click on the search/magnifying glass symbol near the top right corner of the screen.
  6. Click on “Find a Person” in the “Quick Links” column near the left side of the screen.
  7. On the next screen you could input the name of the instructor in the search bar and click on the green "Search" button.
  8. On the resulting screen the instructor's contact email (and other information) will be shown. You could then send an email directly to the instructor requesting that he or she send you the relevant syllabus.
