Dean's Research Awards

The Dean’s Research Awards support undergraduate students who want to explore research in the Faculty of Engineering.
The program allows students to work alongside professors on active research projects across all disciplines of engineering. Through these experiences, students apply what they’ve learned in the classroom, strengthen their technical and communication skills and contribute to discoveries that drive innovation. The program fosters curiosity, collaboration and mentorship—preparing students for future studies or careers in research and development.
Eligibility + Requirements
The Dean’s Research Awards (DRA) are open to undergraduate students registered in an engineering degree program at the University of Alberta. Applicants should demonstrate academic excellence, curiosity and a research interest. Awards are granted based on academic performance, research fit and availability of faculty supervisors.
- The DRA program is available to all full-time engineering students, beginning in their second year of studies, who have a minimum GPA of 3.2.
- GPA is calculated using the two most recent full terms of graded coursework.
- Students are responsible for finding an Engineering faculty member who is willing to supervise them. Professor directory pages are good starting points for project ideas, as well as the DRA project database, where professors can post prospective DRA projects.
See available DRA Projects
- Students must complete at least 40 hours of research over the term(s) of their project.
- Projects may be completed during the Fall term, the Winter term, or across both as a dual-term option.
- DRA projects cannot be completed while a student is on a co-op work term.
- Students cannot receive a DRA for a project that is part of a for-credit course.
- Students are required to present their project results at the scheduled poster presentation competition, which is held in early December (for Fall term projects) or April (for Winter and dual-term projects).
Application Process
Students apply online through a Google form. Before applying, connect with a faculty member whose research interests align with your own.
- Submit an online application form. (Note: Students are responsible for the accuracy of the form as per discussions with their supervisor.) You are responsible for sending a copy of your online application responses to your supervisor for review, as requested.
- Email this link to the online supervisor approval form directly to your supervisor to complete and submit.
Applications will not be considered complete until all items are received.
Timeline
Deadlines vary slightly each year, but the Dean’s Research Awards typically follow the following annual schedule. Plan ahead and connect early with potential supervisors to strengthen your application. Information sessions are held each year winter to help guide students through the process.
