Exchange Programs

Discover the world while earning credit toward your U of A degree!

As a full-time U of A student, you can take fall, winter or full-year courses at more than 140 partner universities in over 30 countries. Grow your confidence and independence as you immerse yourself in a different culture for a few months or a year — all while working toward your degree.

Your perspective and understanding of yourself and others will expand as you meet new friends from different backgrounds, and you’ll have time to explore your passion, whether it be skiing the Alps, surfing off the coast of Australia, experiencing the cherry blossom season in Japan or discovering your ancestral homeland. And if you’re looking to improve your additional language skills, immersion is the way to do it.

Not only might the classes you take on an exchange satisfy a specific course equivalency or general degree requirement, but you pay the same tuition fees that you would pay at U of A. Most students who apply for funding receive it, and some programs even offer financial awards.

“The best parts were just being able to spend time with people who enjoyed the same things even though we didn't come from the same place. Having discussions, whether we were playing board games or going to parties at night.”

Student Stories

  • Lochs, law and lore

“I really, really loved Scotland. I want to practice law. Even though different countries practice law differently, at their core, they're still exactly the same.” Swaleha Ahmad, exchange, Scotland

  • Finding warmth in the cold

“I enjoyed talking to the people up north the most because they're kind of different from the rest of Norway, from anyone you'd meet in Canada. They live so far up north and most of them haven't ever left there. So their perspective on the world was very eye opening.” Afra Rahmanfard, exchange, Norway

  • A cough in the journey

“It's made me way more independent because I had to navigate this whole new country by myself.” Teodora Necsa, exchange, Scotland

  • Funding her way to her roots

“You’ll look back at all the weird, wacky adventures you had while you were trying to figure things out, and laugh about the mistakes that you made early on.”
